Ashingdon

This was the site of a battle in October of 1016. In this battle Cnut inflicted the final defeat of Edmund Ironside. Following this serious defeat Edmund agreed to share dominion with Cnut and gave him Mercia and the Danelaw. When Edmund subsequently died Cnut took kingship of the whole of England.
