Bath

Bath was an important centre of Roman Britain and occupation was probably continuous through to the Saxon period. It became one of the burhs of Wessex under Alfred, with the existing Roman walls being used as part of the fortification.

It is recorded that King Edgar of Wessex was crowned here at a special ceremony in 973. This is notable as he actually came to the throne in 959 and died in 975.
