Chester-le-Street

In the late 9th century the monks from Lindisfarne settled here for a century after fleeing Lindisfarne due to Viking raids. The monks eventually moved on to Durham in 995.

While at Chester-le-Street, the famous Lindisfarne Gospels were translated from Latin to Old English by a monk called Aldred. The translation was written between the Latin lines.
