Durham

The Lindisfarne monks settled in Durham in 995 after a century spent at Chester-Le-Street. They had originally left Lindisfarne due to repeated Viking raids. It is assumed that the famous Lindisfarne Gospels accompanied the monks to Durham though there is no specific reference to them in the medieval records.
