Iona

The monastery at Iona was founded by St Columba in the 6th century. It grew to be the spiritual centre of Scotland in the Early Medieval period.

The first recorded Viking raid in Scotland took place here in 795 when the monastery was sacked. It is likely that there had been earlier unrecorded raids.
