London
In 872 the Viking Great Army overwintered at London.
Alfred occupied London with his troops in 886 in retaliation for Guthrum breaking the peace
established by the Treaty of Wedmore.
It was around 886 that
Alfred moved London to within the safety of the old walls of the Roman city. A block of about
30 hectares was laid out in a rectilinear grid resembling the earlier town-plan to
the West. Before the move London was known as Lundenwic, afterwards as Lundenburg as it
was now part of Alfred's system of burhs.
Edward the Confessor had Westminster Abbey built in London soon after 1042. The design
of the building was influenced by that of the Abbey of Jumieges though Westminster
Abbey is much larger. Edward spent 29 years in exile in Normandy where the Abbey
of Jumieges is found.
Edward the Confessor is buried in Westminster Abbey.
King Harold and his army arrived in London by the 6th October 1066 on his way from
Stamford Bridge to Hastings.
The coronation of William the Conqueror was held at Westminster Abbey on the 25th
December 1066. Harold had previously been crowned there.
