Pevensey

This was the landing place of Duke William of Normandy and his army on the 28th of September 1066.

Sources vary on the size of the invasion fleet. Wace gives the number of ships as 696, while a late list of the quotas of ships to be supplied by feudal vassals for the invasion gives the total number as 777 or perhaps 1000. William of Jumieges records that there were 3000 ships but this is unlikely. The army probably contained around 7000 soldiers as well as numerous horses.

The Normans immediately refortified the defences of the Roman castle to provide their foothold on English soil. The bulk of the army left on the 29th of September to head for Hastings.
