Repton

This was where the Viking Great Army overwintered in 874 having captured the location from the Mercians. At the end of this period the warriors split into two separate armies under Guthrum and Halfdan.

The layout of the Viking camp has been established and is a semi-circular rampart and ditch against the banks of the River Trent. There is also a slipway present inside the camp and this makes it likely that the Vikings hauled their ships out of the water for protection. A Saxon Church was incorporated into the defensive rampart, and outside the camp is a mass burial mound (this mostly contains the bodies of warriors who died from illness during the winter).

Repton is the only excavated and positively identified Viking overwinter camp.
