Salisbury and Wilton

Following the arrival of the Saxons in England the settlement at Salisbury grew. It is extremely likely that the fortifications at Old Sarum were significant and well manned as the area was given a wide berth by the Vikings and King Sweyn in 1003.

During the campaigning of the Viking Great Army Alfred fought a battle against the Vikings at Wilton in 871.
