Worcester
Worcester originated as a Roman market town. The evidence suggests that there was
continuous settlement throughout the Viking period,
probably due to its importance as a river crossing.
A sizable diocesan see was sited there in the 7th century. After the Norman
Conquest Bishop Wulstan remained in situ, the only Saxon
prelate to survive the change in regime.
At nearby Droitwich the brine-springs were exploited for their salt.
